Music Video/Short Film: Massive Attack - Satuday Come Slow

This short film by renowned photographers Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin featuring Ruhal Ahmed, is a meditation on the former detainee’s experience in Guantanemo Bay. For a period of two and a half years he was repeatedly questioned by military staff at the Cuban base, where his interrogators would often play loud music to him repeatedly at high volume, as a form of torture. The film also explores the use of sound on the human body, for both pleasure and pain. It’s a poignant, powerful, timely and emotive piece of work.

It was filmed in the Anechoic Chamber at Cambridge University’s Department of Engineering, a room designed to create total silence. On visiting an Anechoic Chamber, experimental music composer and writer John Cage entered expecting to hear silence, but wrote later, “I heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation.” True silence is impossible.

This is the fifth in a series of seven films commissioned by Massive Attack to accompany their latest album ‘Heligoland’. They commissioned some of the most talented independent film directors around to choose a song from the album and produce a short film on their chosen subject to accompany it.

Massive Attack deployed an independently based Twitter initiative to exclusively broadcast the films, creating a dynamic and engaging experience where users log in to the ‘Tweatre’ with their Twitter accounts, navigate the content, and can directly ‘tweet’ about each film from within the platform. The aesthetic visualisation of the site tributes the direction of the artwork and movement of the music and films.

This sentiment driven activity falls in line with the nature and intention of the films, directors and music itself – to spark emotion, passion and thought within viewer’s minds, and provoke a response, one which they can express through a tweet to a global audience.

Oh No Ono - Elenor Speaks

One of my favourite songs right now, namely »Elenor Speaks« comes from the danish band »Oh No Ono«. Playing music between household appliances in a small kitchen and sitting packed together like sardines is far from cool. But fancy clothes, curly hair and an old vintage vacuum cleaner make that video of a session memorable.

Vex'd - Cloud Seed

In 2005 a duo named Vex'd (Jamie Teasdale & Roly Porter) released a album called »Degenerate«. This apocalyptic sound influenced so much producers after them.

Cloud Seed is kind of a follow up to »Degenerate«, selected from songs intended for a second album plus rarely heard remixes from the same era. Releasedate is March 22, 2010.

»We wrote most of these tracks between late 2006 and early 2007, as part of our second album. Before we could finish the album however, we had moved away from each other, to different cities, in different countries. We wanted to keep writing together, but geography and work made it too hard. Eventually the moment for further work on the album passed and we moved on to other projects, in music and elsewhere and left this album to sleep.

In the middle of 2009, the label contacted us to say that they wanted to release this music, unfinished or not. By this point so much had changed we could not go back to the space we were in when writing these tracks. So we didn't try, we let them be what they are. To change them would be to try to rewrite the moment we were in at that time.

A lot of people have asked where we went after the first album. Many of them hadn't heard our singles & remixes that followed it, so, this is for everyone who wanted to know«.

Guru better after heart attack

Yesterday I posted some Monday Memories and decided to include "99.9%" by Jeru Da Damaja instead of Gang Starr's "Full Clip". Little did I know that at the time, Gang Starr's Guru was already lying in a coma after having suffered a heart attack. Luckily, it's now been confirmed that he is on the road to recovery after surgery.

So to celebrate: put your penis back in your trousers, turn off chatroulette and enjoy the music:

A fantastic new Song and a stunning Video! Obviously their sound got less frenetic and and lost a bit of its squirrellity. Its in any case better than just casting hitpearls before swine!

I'm fine with that variation and a more grown-up-style (whatever that means). Looking for forward to Foals second album »Total Life Forever« which will be released on May 10th.
